In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald gives a vivid picture of America after WWI - a time when the most important thing in life for some people was  to gain wealth and status.
Fitzgerald shows the reader the glamorous, but empty, lifestyle of the rich. Later this period was called ’The Roaring Twenties’ due to the widespread popularity of jazz, speakeasies, bootlegging and  the charleston, among other things.
This is a story of wealth, passion, ambition, possible Mafia connections and murder. Gatsby, with his new wealth and lifestyle, can be seen as a symbol of the American Dream.
